5 Dangerous Spiders in New York This Winter

Are you prepared to face one of these eight-legged monstrosities in the basement, crawl space, storage unit, or crevices of your Westchester home? Ensure your family is ready for spiders to expose their multi-eyed, fanged face and protect yourself from these common species, know the spider dangers out there, and learn to defend yourself from them.

Worst Spider Problems in Westchester

If bitten by a spider, visit the emergency room immediately and take the spider body along for identification. Despite the danger of many spiders, common side effects generally endure shorter periods than people anticipate.

1. Wolf Spider

In spite of their ability to produce silk, wolf spiders do not create webs. This species earned the title because of similarities between wolves, like their furry brown or gray bodies, and the tendency of hunting among vegetation. Excellent eyesight allows them advantages prey often don't anticipate, especially combined with extremely speedy legs. Females carry the upcoming generation in oval-shaped, silken sacs on their spinnerets.

2. Yellow Sac Spider

This species is the most dangerous native to New York, although its venom only causes a painful bite and ulcer blisters with few long-term effects, so its necrotic venom often is attributed to brown recluse spiders, which are more poisonous and rare in New York. In accordance with the name, this species creates silken, sac-like nests for shelter and egg sacs and has yellow body coloration.

3. Funnel-web, or Grass Spider

This species is not highly poisonous, so there is nothing to fear of this spider. It constructs a wide sheet across vegetation with a funnel at one end where it awaits a victim, runs out, and delivers a bite to subdue it. Because it is only 3/4 inch long, its venom cannot harm humans; however, because of the difficulty to identify spiders, never ignore a spider bite, but consult a physician with the killed spider for identification.

4. American House Spider

This species commonly weaves three-dimensional spider webs inside homes and is a specific classification commonly called a cobweb weaver. Other cobweb weavers are hobo spiders, which aren't dangerous to humans, and black widows, which are rare in New York. The American House Spider has a round, shiny abdomen, skinny legs, and spins a messy web where it suspends itself upside down while awaiting prey.

5. Cellar Spider

This species also is not dangerous to humans and has a long abdomen and unusually long legs. It hides upside down in close spaces with long, straight strands of webbing extended across its hiding place. When feeling threatened, it will bounce and gyrate on its web to confuse a potential predator, almost becoming invisible.

Most Dangerous Spiders

The two most dangerous spiders in the United States are the brown recluse spider and black widow spider, which has an hourglass-shaped mark on its underside. Brown recluse spider bites deliver a necrotic venom that forms a blister and can leave nasty scars, and black widow venom attacks the nervous system, can cause difficulty breathing and muscular pain, and is reportedly fifteen times more poisonous than rattlesnake venom.

Other dangerous spider species throughout the world include Sydney funnel-web spider, which is considered the most venomous spider in the world, with venom is easily strong enough to kill an adult human. The Australian funnel-web spider is found only in Australia, so the risk of this spider to show up in an American home is small. Another type of dangerous spider is the Brazilian wandering spider, a native to Central and South America also known as the banana spider.

Best Methods to Control Spiders Yourself

Many of these tips will help control spiders and other pests as well, so follow each tip to get rid of spiders and keep other pests away.

  • Clean Your Home
  • No household attracts insects because of filthiness alone; however, if you often vacuum and establish a regular cleaning and sanitation regimen, spiders are less likely to find harborages in the crevices of your home. Clear clutter in all areas of your home, especially in darker, ill-frequented areas, such as basements, closets, cupboards, and air ducts, and exercise caution when reaching into storage containers like boxes, etc.

  • Reduce Spider Food
  • Inside the home, seal your food in airtight containers high off the ground to reduce the likelihood of insect invasion, and turn off outdoor lights, so flies and moths don't attract spiders nearby.

  • Block Spider Entry Points
  • Use silicone caulking to seal crevices around door and window frames, the foundation and sill plates, and the gaps around water and gas piping.

  • Reduce Spider Harborages
  • Trim vegetation, like grass, at least two feet from the home perimeter, keep the yard clean of clutter and fallen branches, and trim shrubs at least one foot from the house siding. Place the garbage dumpsters and firewood or compost piles on platforms at least twenty feet from the house and one foot off the ground.

Safe Ways to Deter and Kill Spiders Yourself

  • White Vinegar and Water
  • Mix a half-and-half solution in a spray bottle and apply this in harborages, including the home exterior, which will effectively deter spider activity.

  • Peppermint
  • Scientifically proven as effective spider deterrents, essential peppermint oil will maintain a fresh-smelling home when applied, so consider purchasing an essential oil humidifier.

  • Over-the-Counter Products
  • Boric acid, glue traps, and pesticides are proven effective against some spider species. Be careful where these are applied to avoid danger to children, the elder, and pets.
