Eliminate Stink Bugs from your Home this Winter

Winter is coming, and so are stink bugs. This pest is common throughout the United States, especially along the East Coast. Learn to identify a stink bug invasion, keep them from entering your home, kill stink bugs, and other pest management techniques for these pests this winter.

The brown marmorated stink bug, or Halyomorpha halys, is a common pest throughout the United States these days, including a large infestation of them recently in and around Washington DC. It is considered an invasive species since they came from Eastern Asia, China, and Japan. However, there are native species as well, and hundreds of them. Learn what to do to keep them from your Westchester home this season, and what to do if you have them

As the weather cools, these pests gather in large numbers to invade homes, including your home in Westchester. During the cooler weather, they seek shelter to undergo a hibernation state called diapause. Remember, if you see one of these critters, don't squish it. The best way to get rid of stink bugs over the short term is with soapy water or a vacuum cleaner.

Identify Stink Bugs and a Stink Bug Invasion

Description

  • Flat, shield-shaped body
  • Six legs and antennae
  • Smell something like coriander when smashed or threatened
  • Feed on plants, fruits, leaves
  • Gather in large numbers on house siding, cars, windows, etc.

Stink bugs gather en masse in late fall and early winter before they go into their hibernation stage. They find entry points into your home and invade your attic, windows, crawl spaces, or other accessible places in your home. They awaken again in March or April and lay eggs around their favorite trees, like ash or maple.

Large Gatherings

They come out in such large numbers because of their nasty stench: No predator would ever want to eat them. Dogs or cats might try to choke them down every once in a while but often end up vomiting them back up. If your pet has swallowed a stink bug and experiences a strong reaction like this, consult your veterinarian.

You have a Major Infestation if ...

  • They come crawling from cracks around interior light fixtures
  • They crawl through electric plugs
  • You find them in home appliances, toaster, microwave, etc.
  • They crawl out of heat vents or air return ducts

If you have a major infestation, do not try to get rid of them yourself. Consumer insecticides and other over-the-counter products will only drive them deeper into the walls and other hiding places and will leave their dead bodies in the walls, which can attract carpet beetles or bacteria to come and eat away the stink bug carcasses.

Stink Bug Control You can Do at Home

If you have a major infestation in your walls, again, do not try to get rid of them yourself. Call a pest professional immediately. They have products that can root the stink bugs out of the walls, completely eradicate them, and prevent them from returning for long term bug control.

But here are some things you can do on your own:

  • Seal entry points

Using silicone caulking look for and seal gaps, cracks and crevices, and other holes these critters might use to come inside: cracks around foundation or sill plates, gaps around window screens, window settings, and door frames. Also, install and keep weather stripping in good repair, and install door sweeps on all exterior doors.
  • Vacuum them up

When you find them, avoid crushing them. They will emit a nasty smell, and their body fluids could leave a stain. The vacuum is an excellent way to suck them off your car, siding, or window. Just remember to place the vacuum bag in the freezer overnight so that they are eliminated. Don't leave the vacuum out with live stink bugs inside, or they'll crawl out again, and you'll have to start all over again.
  • Eliminate food sources

Stink bugs love fruit like berries, apples, peaches, or plums. They also eat leaves from these trees, so be sure to clean up your yard. Pick up fallen leaves and fruit to avoid attracting them near your home.
  • Soap and water

Another effective way to be rid of them is to mix grease-fighting dish soap with water and pour it into a hand or hose sprayer. Apply this to the outside of your home where large numbers of Stink bugs have gathered and watch the solution kill stink bugs easily. This deterrent doesn't work well over the long term, but it is a simple and effective method to use.

Call the Pest Professionals

Especially if you suspect you have a large infestation of stink bugs around your home or business, do not try to manage the problem on your own. You could accidentally attract other pests into your home or even make the problem worse. Don't squish them, or they'll stink horribly. Instead, vacuum them up or wash them away with soap, water, and a hand or hose sprayer.

Luckily, you don't have to deal with these nuisance pests on your own. Fox Pest Control is ready and trained to help. Call today for a free estimate, and your pest professional technician will come to rid your home of stink bugs. We work hard so that you don't have to. Pests ... it's what we do.
