Are there little furry creatures digging in your yard? Moles aren’t hard to spot. If you see a 4 to 7 inch critter that looks like it doesn’t have any eyes or ears, you’re probably dealing with a mole. They’re definitely not pretty, and they can be very hard to get rid of. But if you see one, you don’t have time to waste, because they can cause much damage in a very short amount of time. Fox Pest Control can help.
You might already know for sure that you have a mole problem. But here are a couple of the most common signs of mole problem in Westchester County & The Hudson Valley.
Active mole mounds are essential tunnel entrances. They are shaped like tiny volcanoes.
In their pursuit of insects, moles keep their tunnels close to the surface, which causes trails of dead grass in lawns and crop fields.
Sightings of moles are very rare because even though they aren’t completely blind, moles’ poor eyesight makes them very shy. They’re much more comfortable underground than in the open. However, they do poke their heads up to sniff around every once in a while.

Mole tunnels are usually 8-10 inches deep, though they often create temporary tunnels just under the surface. Tunnels can reach dozens of square feet or more, depending on the time of year. During the breeding season, male moles enlarge their tunnels to make room for a female.
Moles
Their mounds look like circular piles of sand or dirt.
They dig extensive tunnels, usually close to the surface.
Food sources include grubs and insects.
They have pointy noses and shovel-shaped forepaws.
Gophers
Mounds are conical shape and have a plug, or dirt they use to cover the hole as a doorway for entry.
They dig deep tunnels near tree roots, plant roots or bulbs, and gardens.
Food sources are plants and only plants. They start with the roots and eventually pull the entire plant to a food storage tunnel deep underground.
Visible eyes, large front teeth, food pouch in both cheeks.
Moles only eat insects, worms, grubs, and other invertebrates. They don’t eat plants of any kind, although their burrows often lead them to destroy the delicate roots of flowers or decorative plants.
Depending on the species, most moles have the following characteristics:
Dark brown or black fur
Tiny eyes and ears that are almost invisible
A long, pointed nose
Shovel-shaped forepaws with curved claws useful for digging
Body size slightly larger than a mouse, but not as big as a rat
Stockier and rounder body shape than a mouse, and grow to be around 4-6 inches long
Contrary to popular belief, most moles actually have some eyesight. Although they spend almost all their time underground, their eyes are able to see light and movement but not much else. They use their sensitive noses to detect where worms and other prey are located.
